American Horror Story: Tate Gets Beat Up

What the what, American Horror Story? One scene?!

This is MY episode, Ghost Boy.
With Evan Peters only appearing in one scene, I don't have a lot to say on the angst front. I did try to filter this scene through my Tate/Tate Prime theory - and here's what I've come up with. When the scene begins and Constance summons him, she gets Tate Prime. He's creepy, his tone is steady, cold, and emotionless. As she starts questioning him, she seems to shake him into regular Tate. The one who is terrified of Violet finding out the truth. Check out the two screen caps below.

There's like a 79% chance I'm just being ridiculous. But what else have I got to do with my time, right?

On a different note, I was pretty surprised by the physical nature of the abuse Constance inflicted upon Tate. I assumed she was more the emotional torture type. But apparently not...

Who wouldn't feel some sympathy for this kid? Just look at that patheticness. Physical abuse is one of the oldest tricks in the angst book. Throw in some illiteracy and Tate would pretty much achieve the grand slam of angsties. Also - it looked to me like Evan Peters just let Jessica Lange smack the crap out of him. Maybe that's how he got that black eye he had in the interview over at younghollywood.com.

He does say it was Jessica Lange...

Despite the general lack of Tate and the total lack of Violet, the episode was fairly solid. I appreciate that they're still bringing in new ghosts. The more ghost stories they open with, the more confident I am that they could stay with this house indefinitely; ushering in a parade of phenomenal guest stars. I also found Hayden more engaging than usual. She's definitely better as a ghost. And of course Constance was great beginning to end, as always. I'm looking forward to next week. Was that Tate who Violet seemed so terrified of in the preview?!

  1. First of all - love your Angst Reports!

I agree with your Hayden assessment. There's a lot of Hayden haters, but she cracks me the eff up. When Travis tells her he and Constance are expecting a baby, and she's like "a fossil?" - pure comedic gold. Also love her sparring with Tate. It would be great if we could put those two in a cage match together.

    Keep up the awesome reviews!

  2. I am not a fan of Hayden. Her character is annoying and boring. She is just another crazy bitch and also apparently a ghost psychiatrist. Maybe her and Ben should open a joint practice.

Not a big fan of this episode, lacked intensity (besides the scene with tate and constance) and seemed like filler. AHS keeps adding more and more characters when they should focus on the exceptional ones they have already.

  3. I'm just glad that they're finally filling in the back story of the older ghosts while intertwining them with the "new" ghosts! Like Charles and the Black Dahlia/Elizabeth Short with Travis. Or Charles and the Dahlia, period.

The more I read your blog and the more I watch (and re-watch) AHS, I think you're right about Tate and his split personality, and I can't help but wonder if that's also part of what Constance wants Ben to help Tate with.

    1. I definitely think Tate has a fractured mind from many external factors, primarily Constance! I re watched the earlier episodes with Ben and Tate and felt quite creeped out, Ben came across as smarmy and arrogant!! Stating that he had treated psychopaths before and that those with the right chemical imbalance and psychological damage could not be reached......then telling Tate that everybody can get better.......well, maybe not everybody considering how it all turns out.....! I actually think that Violet is the one person who 'reaches' Tate and brings out his latent humanity, because she is innocent, virginal and thus 'pure', she is his chance for redemption and can save him in the same way he tries to save her from eternal damnation in the Hell house when she overdoses. Prior to her arrival he was merely trying to keep the women of the house happy. Moira wanted him to sire a child for her so he killed Patrick and Chad because they were fighting and weren't going to have a baby but he thought a new couple would move in to give her a child after the house became empty!!?Constance wanted him to be perfect as proof of her importance, he was also her reassurance to herself that her womb was not 'cursed' entirely. Later, Hayden used him to do her dirty work and scare Vivien by manipulating him into believing he would lose Violet. Violet is the only one who doesn't feed into Tate's degradation, corruption and baser instincts, she is almost his conscience and his feelings for her force him to aim for something higher, to move away from the 'darkness. He seems to hate Constance (probably with good reason!) and I don't think the switch in this episode had anything to do with his 'other' Tate, merely that once he realised that Constance knew he had impregnated Vivien, he was terrified she would tell Violet out of spite (obviously there is no love lost between Tate and his mother and Constance did try to poison Violet in an earlier episode via a cupcake!!) thus he was scared that he would lose her and be left alone in the darkness again.

    2. ....ok, it's late and I meant that Nora (Montgomery) wanted Tate to sire her a child, not Moira.....Doh! Great blog, really interesting reading on here and lovely screen caps!

  4. Thanks so much! I'm so happy people keep coming back to the Tate posts. They're definitely my favorite. And I keep coming up with excuses to write about these characters again. I'm so bummed they won't be around next season :(
