The Greatest Love of All: Damon and Stefan on The Vampire Diaries

The Brothers Salvatore. Hands down one of the best relationships on television. As often as they spar and despite the fact that they both love the same girl, they're fiercely loyal to one another.

This week, we saw a flashback to 1912. It contained the moment in which Stefan became The Ripper in no small part thanks to Damon's tutelage. Homeboy actually decapitated a girl with his fangs! (I have to say - for all its CW charms - Vampire Diaries is one of the darker shows on network television). Damon didn't stop him from running off and becoming the monstrous creature he was for so long.

Now, in modern Mystic Falls, Damon won't make the same mistake twice. He's not going to let Stefan go cold turkey because then, eventually, Stefan will snap. Also - cold-turkey Stefan is one jittery son-of-a-gun. At least switch ring fingers if you're going to be all tappity-tap-tap.

When Damon finally gets Stefan to have a bit of blood, who should show up but Elena? If Damon were a crummier written character, he'd be all, "Huzzah! Stefan looks like a monster. Score one for me!" But no. Damon assures Stefan that Elena will forgive him.

Ian Somerhalder deserves a lot of credit for never allowing Damon to seem too soft. Even when he's doing soft things - like saving Stefan and giving him pep talks - he keeps his swagger. Yes, these characters are angsty, and hot, and often shirtless. But they're also deeply layered and emotionally complex. Part of me thinks if this show were on a different network with uglier actors, it'd get far more of the credit it deserves. But... I'd rather it be our little brilliant secret than lose the eye-candy. I just love that The Vampire Diaries proves a show can contain both great writing and hot young people.

I can't leave behind this episode without mentioning Alaric. Here here, Vampire Diaries! On a show with so much angst, Alaric's dead wife/dead girlfriend was small potatoes. Not enough for me to ever report on. But slowly going mad and murdering innocent townspeople? Yeah. I can get behind that.  More on Alaric in the coming weeks.
