The Secret Circle: One Last Spell

Well, kats and kittens, this is the final post on The Secret Circle. The fledgling series got cancelled so we shan't be returning to Chance Harbor again, at least not through our televisions.

If you've read any of my previous Secret Circle posts, you know I never fully got behind this one. My biggest problem was with the lead character Cassie. The girl seemed both uptight and unfun, yet everyone adored her. There was also the odd balance struck between the adults and the teenagers. I never cared about the adults. And the teenagers never felt like teenagers. Plus, it was the most serious supernatural show I've ever encountered.

It took Secret Circle a while to establish that the arc for this season was (kind of) about Eben, an external evil we never got to know or understand but who inexplicably wanted all of our main characters dead. The show picked up quite a bit with the introduction of John Blackwell, but by then, it was too late.

Sadly, I thought the final montage of Secret Circle was one of its better moments. Apart from the Faye/Jake romance, which had only taken on a degree of earnestness in the final two episodes, the setup for Adam to become power hungry and Diana's decision to get the hell out were intriguing. I liked Diana after she grew a pair and started standing up to Cassie. I would have stuck around to follow her storyline.

Mostly, the greatest impact The Secret Circle finale had on me was making me want to watch Queer As Folk again. Brian Kinney needs to be on The Angst Report. Gale Harold is awesome and TSC didn't let him be awesome frequently enough. He had some good moments in the finale but unfortunately they were moments sans Diana. Either way, Brian Kinney was way cooler than...hold on...let me look it up... ah! Charles Meade. Brian Kinney was way cooler than Charles Meade.

So this is the end of the road. Will Cassie turn to the dark side or remain boring? Will Diana return to Chance Harbor? Will Adam throw the ring back into the fiery chasm from whence it came? Will third girl's name ever stick in my head? Will Jake get tortured any more? Would the new Blackwell kids have all been super hot guys? Alas. The world will never know. (Unless the world reads the novels...)
