The Vampire Diaries Season Three Finale: Bye Alaric

Well, Vampire Diaries is gone for another year. When it ended, I felt many things. I'm excited that Elena is going to be a vampire next season. I'm glad that Klaus still exists in some form or another. But mostly, mostly, I was sad that Alaric is now dead dead.

I'd be willing to bet that no other television character has died quite so many times as Alaric. It's got to be, what, six or seven times now? Depending on how you count...

Over the years, Alaric had become the dependable moral center of the show. Emphasis on dependable. He was human, he was good, and he was there for ya, babe. A regular Uncle Jesse. And yet somehow he wasn't boring. Matt Davis deserves the props for that. I'm really glad his pilot, The Cult, got picked up. At least he'll be on my television screen next year.

Also Elijah was around for a minute in the finale too. I don't really have anything to say about him, but he looked sort of adorable and serious, so I wanted to screen-cap him.

Okay, so the BIG angst. Damon and Elena. In a phone call.  I can't pretend I wasn't little disappointed that Elena didn't have to face Damon when she told him her choice. *coughbadchoicecough* I wanted her to see Damon's face when she crushed him.

I love the fact that Damon actually asked her the question. If you HAD to choose... It was Damon stepping out onto a ledge and taking a leap of faith. He knew it might gut him - and it did - but he thought he might soon be dead. It's something he doesn't do often. And he opened himself up for the pain of the answer. Poor fella. Someone CHOOSE HIM, damnit!

Then Elena makes the comment that maybe if she had met Damon first and... cue the flashback. They really love their shots of Ian Somerhalder looking straight up at the camera. They do it a lot. Not that I'm complaining...

So Elena did meet Damon first. After briefly thinking she was Katherine, he went full-charm and told her all about the amazing love she deserved.

The problem is, he could have been describing himself or Stefan. Between the two, he's definitely the more dangerous. But between, like, all human people and all vampires, S and D both fit the bill of what he was describing. The only person he most certainly wasn't describing was Matt. Matt's life sucks.

Then Damon erases her memory. The best thing about Elena vamping out is that she'll start to regain all the memories she's had wiped. She'll remember that she met Damon first. It's not like that's THE thing keeping her from being with Damon, but it'll be fun when she realizes that these boys had screwed with her mind.

Back in present time, Evilaric is kicking the crap out of Damon. Considering Alaric and Damon were officially my favorite TVD characters at this point, that was fun scene.

And it only got funner when Alaric started to die. Because Damon knows what that means. Not only is Alaric going to be officially gonesville, but it means Elena is dying. I only care about Elena dying insofar as it tortures Damon. Look at that face vvv That is a face of ANGST.

And this is a face of death. Ugh. Bye Alaric. You deserved better.

Then Alaric shows up to say good bye to Jeremy. Oh, sadness. In order for Elena to embrace her vamp status and take on a parental-ish protector role for Jeremy, there needs to be no one else left to do it. And Alaric would never abandon them. He could have had his memory wiped and then woken up an amnesiac in Quebec where he meets a nice girl, settles down in a log cabin, learns French, has babies, and remains a happy Canadian forever and ever. But no. I guess you can only kill a guy so many times before it sticks.

This is his Elena-is-dead face. Subtle. I like it. Like, "Bummer. Elena is dead." I'm sure Matt Davis will show up in ghost form on occasion, but that's not really what I care about. I wanted the character to have a happy ending. Alas.

The chief thing a season finale needs to accomplish is making the audience want to see the next season. Well done, TVD. I want to see vampiric Elena. I'm definitely curious. I'm also hopeful Elena will continue her bad-ass evolution. The farther she gets from the worried wet blanket of season one, the more I like her. Season four has potential for miles and I'm looking forward to it.

Sigh. But poor Alaric...

  1. Alariiiiiic! Nooo. But we're probably gonna see him pop up in like ghost form, like they did with Lexi and Rose.

Also? Klaus is possessing the mebe dead body of Tyler. Who is the boyfriend of Caroline. Who Klaus likes. He is absolutely going to milk this for all he's worth and Caroline is going to think it's Tyler.
