Gone But Not Forgotten: Angel and Buffy and World Ending Sex. Literally.

Here's how I'm looking at the arc of Angel. He comes back from Hell and he's totally mind-fucked. So he does a lot of tai chi to get better.

As he starts to shake off the 100 years of Hell torture thing, his feelings for Buffy come back with a woosh (never mind the whole she-sent-him-to-Hell-thing). So first he's all askew from Hell and then he's all askew from love. That's how he spends the first half of season 3.

The problem is, now they know what happens if they hook up. Which is what oodles of making out tends to lead to. I mean, I guess they could have Willow on permanent stand-by to re-curse Angel every time they want to get frisky, but admittedly, that does sound like a huge pain and also not a ton of fun for Willow.

But they're just so darn sexy when they're kissing. So maybe it'd be more fun for Willow than I think...

They can't keep their hands off each other and it's totally angsty and lusty and awesome. But then Buffy reminds Angel that the world might end if they ever hook up. That's a lot of pressure to put on a friendship.

And that makes him sad...

And Buffy's all, "Look, man. If you swearsies you don't love me, we can be BFFs and exchange silly-bandz" But Angel doesn't want to be bandz buddies. He wants to be hump buddies. And so the episode ends with everybody being miserable. As usual.

David Boreanaz angst ridden Angel Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Three
Buffy and Angel have the ultimate star-crossed relationship. Not only is there the whole vampire/slayer thing, but sex LITERALLY turns Angel evil. The only way to protect his soul is to remain chaste. Funny how chaste vampires were a thing way back in the 90s. Coming up is one of the angstiest and best Angel episodes of Buffy. But first we have an alternate reality full of torture to deal with!

The X-Files Saturday: Scully Gets Real

Season two ended with a cliffhanger. The cliffhanger started with Mulder in a tank top.

David Duchovny as Fox Mulder in The X-Files
Also, I think the set dec in this scene is complete BS. That paper towel holder? No way. Mulder doesn't put his paper towels on that. Hanging pots on a rack on the wall? Out of character.

Anyway, we find out later that the water in Mulder's building is poisoned. It's making him paranoid. He freaks out about a lot of things. Some of them are pretty legit, but really, everyone can tell he's not quite right. He feels all floopy and goes to Scully for help.  And gets some.

He has to sleep it off.

While he's sleeping, Scully does some investigating. But Mulder thinks she's on their side and he yells at Scully. Scully does not like to be yelled at.

She could have told him to eff off, but she didn't. She keeps helping him.

Mulder's dad gets shot. He doesn't take it well.

The conspiracy is getting deeper than ever. Seriously, it's deep. It involves so many people. There are Native Americans and Nazis. And Krychek. Mulder hides from Krychek.

Mulder wants to shoot Krychek. They fight. But then Scully busts in and pulls her gun and yells and it gets all intense. Then, she shoots Mulder. For reals. Scully shoots Mulder.

Like woah. Then she takes him to New Mexico to visit an old Navajo code talker for some healin'.

Mulder then goes limp arm searching in the New Mexican desert. He finds a box car full of alien-like corpses. Then it gets set on fire. And that's how the season ends. WHA???

I don't want to spoil it for you, but the episode arc ends with Mulder and Scully hugging in a hospital room. Again.

The Vampire Diaries: Try To Kill Me, Stefan. Come on!

Evil Alaric! Fun times!

Matt Davis as Alaric Saltzman on The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Heart of Darkness Evilaric Matt Davis Alaric The Vampire Diaries
The thing I love about Alaric is that before this season, he seemed very safe. He was a protector, a paternal figure for Elena and Jeremy, an all around good guy. Lots of bad things happened to him, but he kept on keeping on. I was happy when he became a part of The Gilbert clan. It was like he finally had a place to belong; like he was finally wanted.

The thing that's brilliant about The Vampire Diaries is that rather than destroy the steadfast character they've created with Alaric, they spilt him in two. He gets to be both good and evil. And it's not the gradual shifting that happens with Stefan. Within one episode, we get both Alaric and Evilaric. PLUS, for an extra angst layer, Alaric has no control over it. Yay guilt!

Matt Davis as Alaric Saltzman on The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Heart of Darkness Evilaric Matt Davis Alaric The Vampire Diaries
What's the best way to get Evilaric to pop out from his turtle shell? Simple. Torture him. With good Alaric's full consent, no less.

"Try to kill me, Stefan. Come on!" Aww yeah.

Matt Davis as Alaric Saltzman on The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Heart of Darkness Evilaric Matt Davis Alaric The Vampire Diaries
Stefan tries. He beats and breaks and bleeds poor Alaric until Mr. Hyde comes out to play. And Stefan aint no pansy when it comes to the torture. He has to make Evilaric actually believe his life may be in danger.

And then Evilaric shows up and is all, "WHAT? HERE I AM!"

Him and Stefan spar until Stefan beats him into submission. Poor Alaric.

By the end of the episode, Alaric is on the verge of teaming up with wannabe slayer Esther. Who or what they'll bring down is anyone's guess.

I like Matt Davis. A lot. Alaric could be a boring character. Safe usually is. But he brings a quiet strength to him that gives Alaric a nice depth. He seems beaten down by life, but he won't abandon Elena. I want good things for him. I want him to be happy.

Eventually. For now he can be partially evil and totally beaten down.

Once Upon A Time: Daddy Dearest, Rumpelstiltskin

I'm so glad things are finally new again! I miss you, television, when you're away.

Eion Bailey as August Booth on Once Upon A Time S01E19 The Return
Once Upon A Time is finally back and they gave us a Rumpel episode! Huzzah! The more Robert Carlyle on my screen, the better.

Robert Carlyle as Mr. Gold Rumpelstiltskin on Once Upon A Time S01E19 The Return
In Fairyland, Rumpel's son Bae is super sad that his daddy's gone devil. He's running around turning the townsfolk into snails and stomping(?) maids to death. It's not very pleasant for the youth.

Robert Carlyle as Mr. Gold Rumpelstiltskin on Once Upon A Time S01E19 The Return
In Storybrooke the Angst is in full tilt. Mr. Gold thinks August is his son come to murder him. This really bums him out because he's been trying to reconnect with his son for years. In fact - this episode reveals that the whole long-con of the curse was so that he could find Bae again.

Robert Carlyle as Mr. Gold Rumpelstiltskin on Once Upon A Time S01E19 The Return
In Fairyland, Rumpel breaks a deal for the first and only time. Bae has found a way into a world where Rumpel wouldn't be evil. But Rumpel's a big old chicken and he won't jump down the green-portal-drain-of-doom even though he promised he would.

Robert Carlyle as Mr. Gold Rumpelstiltskin on Once Upon A Time S01E19 The Return
After Bae disappears, Rumpel immediately regrets not following. But no matter how deep he digs in the mud, the glowing sinkhole is gonesville.

Robert Carlyle as Mr. Gold Rumpelstiltskin on Once Upon A Time S01E19 The Return
Rumpelstiltskin's character is based around his cowardice preventing his happiness. Cowardice and bad luck because that episode when he got his power wasn't entirely his fault. But. He lost his wife, his son, and Belle because he was scared. And I'm really looking forward to eventually seeing his redemption.

Robert Carlyle as Mr. Gold Rumpelstiltskin on Once Upon A Time S01E19 The Return
The episode wraps up with the reveal that August ins't actually Bae. Which means Bae is still out there somewhere. With every question Once answers, it asks four more. Which is awesome for now. I just hope we don't have a bunch of tailies and a smoke monster in our future.

The Vampire Diaries: When People See Good, They Expect Good

Last Thursday on The Vampire Diaries, Damon got beat with a bat. Twice. And that was like #12 on the list of angsty things that happened. I love this show.

Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore shirtless on The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Heart of Darkness Delena
I couldn't help myself; I went Ctrl+shift+4 CRA-AZY this week. There was just too much awesome. Let's get started.

For Delena fans, pretty much the best thing EVER happened last week. And yeah - this whole post is going to be about that.

It started with Damon coming out of the shower, shirtless and sexy. He puts on a shirt (boo...), looks out the window, pours himself a drink. The whole time, Elena is watching from her bed where she half-heartedly pretends to sleep. I loved this. Kudos, show. Because no matter how you slice it, Damon is sexy. We oogle him week in and week out. And plenty of the chicks on the show acknowledge how attractive he is. But Elena never really seems to notice. I appreciate that she finally openly admired the man-candy. How could one not while he's strutting around all half clothed?

Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert on The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Heart of Darkness Delena
Then, he sees her seeing him. And he kind of goes 'huh.' Then she sends out telepathic signals that scream "GET IN MY BED NOW."

And he obliges.

Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Heart of Darkness Delena
They've had a few very nice "in bed" moments before but this was the best. Elena was taken with the fact that Damon had helped Rose die peacefully (as she should be). And Damon tells her honestly, he doesn't want people to expect anything decent from him. Presumably because he doesn't want to be a disappointment. ANGST!

And the hand holding. This put me in full-squee mode before they even got out of bed. Pick Damon, Elena! Choose him. Love him.

Then they go out on to the balcony and Elena kiss-attacks him. It was great. That's the best sort of attack. Much better than being beaten by a baseball bat (for Damon, anway. For us, it's sort of six of one...)

They kiss...

And then they pause...

And then they kiss some more. Sigh.

Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore and Nina Dobrev as Elena on The Vampire Diaries  Heart of Darkness Delena Kiss
Then they go off for a while and deal with the actual plot of this episode. The chick who sired Rose is dead, Kol is sexy-evil for a bit, and that's that. Damon is a wee bit wounded.

Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore and Nina Dobrev as Elena on The Vampire Diaries  Heart of Darkness Delena
And so is Elena. Prompting his sexy man hand to sexily brush back her hair.

Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore and Nina Dobrev as Elena on The Vampire Diaries  Heart of Darkness Delena Kiss
Then Damon's question: "What are you doing, Elena?" He pretty much hits the nail on the head when he assumes she's waiting for him to screw things up. That's just what he do, yo. If you don't want people to expect good things from you, they won't. He's achieved what he wanted - everyone assumes he'll F up.

Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Heart of Darkness Delena
But then the best line of the episode. "What if I didn't?" Yes. Precisely. What if he didn't? Then he's best. Then he wins. He's stronger, he's hotter, he's cleverer, he's all around BETTER than Stefan. Stefan has no personality between boring and mass-murderer. All Damon has to do is not be the guy who gets hated. I vote for that.

Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Heart of Darkness Delena
Vampire Diaries always knows the perfect ways to manipulate its audience. It's always got angst and sex and complicated dynamics and characters who care. I think the one thing the show typically falls a little short on is making Elena relatable. I don't usually understand why she makes the choices she makes. This particular episode brought her to us. She was us. She was the girl who couldn't help staring at Damon, couldn't keep her paws off him when she had the chance. I appreciate that. Obviously, I GET that. Basically, my only thought when this episode ended was, "More please!" I'm looking forward to this week. They've set the bar high.
