Sons of Anarchy: He Went Out A Warrior

It's been a while since I've reported on any angst. But I'm trying this new thing where I only post when there's actually some angst to post about. Last night's Sons of Anarchy definitely fits the damn bill. Ugh. Spoilers to follow.

I'm bummed. Simply put - I really liked Opie. He was a soulful character; the angel on Jax's shoulder. But he was also a character who kept getting beaten down again and again and again. By fate, by the club, by bad luck - he was crushed over and over until there was almost nothing left. I wanted the magical fairy of happiness to swoop down and make him feel better. But Kurt Sutter isn't really a magical fairy of happiness kind of guy.

So, yes. I'm sad. And frankly, I hate whenever young blood leaves this show (Half Sack!). But I absolutely love that the death of Opie actually made sense. He had nothing left. His wife was gone, his dad was gone, his kids are in safe hands, and someone from his club isn't getting out of jail alive. He decides that someone is going to be him. And he's certainly not going to sit by and watch his best friend die when he can stop it.

I can't help but compare this death to the death of Jimmy Darmody - which I'm still really pissed about. Where Jimmy's death felt entirely based on behind the scenes shenanigans (and a desire to copy the shock value of Game of Thrones), Opie's death was motivated, logical, and inevitable. It was drawn into his characterization and set up perfectly in last week's episode. And in terms of writing - there aren't a lot of paths left for Opie to go down. He's already disconnected in so many ways, to have him make this choice makes sense. Plus it lets the character go out a hero.

But still. I'm bummed. His poor kids. I vote for the magical fairy of happiness next time.

Switched at Birth: Emmett and Bay Roadblock Five - Emmett's Douche Move

Ugh. Ugh ugh ugh. With a side of Arg.

Bemmett Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Season One Bay and Emmett SAB
Oh, Emmett. Why?! Why are you being self destructive and tanking your relationship with Bay? Why why why? Is it because you think love can never work and you subconsciously want to screw things up before Bay can fall out of love with you? Is it because you felt SO betrayed by Bay's butting in with your parents that you wanted to counter-betray? Whatever it is - you were WRONG and I'm angry with you. You guys could have had it all!

Bemmett Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Season One Bay and Emmett SAB
So... here's how it shook down. Bay talked to Emmett's dad and convinced him that Emmett was better off with his mom. Which he is. Emmett was keeping his relationship with Bay as this private, no feuding parents allowed zone and Bay mixed the worlds together by interfering. Again, I feel Emmett here. Yes, there would be a sense of betrayal. But it's one of those things where when he cools down and thinks about it, he should realize Bay was doing the right thing.

Bemmett Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Season One Bay and Emmett SAB
But. He acts before the cool-down phase and that screws things up royally. His video phone fight with Bay is pretty angsty. He's so mad - and Sean Berdy scores a major win for acting that scene like a champ. Plus - the phone freezes up, only mounting to the frustration he's feeling. And he punches a mantle. Owwie!

Bemmett Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Season One Bay and Emmett SAB
While getting ice for his wounded hand, he meets slut-du-jour Simone. I have no sympathy for this chick. I feel like they've tried to make her a little less one sided than a typical villain - and maybe she is a more realistic mean girl than the variety t.v. normally depicts - but she's a whore and I hate her. And Emmett sleeps with her. BASTARD!

Bemmett Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Season One Bay and Emmett SAB
The weird thing is that his sleeping with Simone sort of erases 100% of  his anger toward Bay. Guilt becomes his primary emotion, and story-wise, all parental drama is essentially wiped off the map.

Bemmett Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Season One Bay and Emmett SAB
He moves back in with his mom, and her only substantive scene with him simply serves to twist the Bay knife. His mom has finally come around - Bay is pretty special. Yeah, Emmett! Way to be an ass! And she's a virgin! And you know that! And you slept with one of her enemies! Ugh!

Bemmett Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Season One Bay Emmett kiss SAB
Before Emmett gets around to telling Bay, there is a false, happy sheen on their relationship thanks to his getting past his anger toward her. To Bay, it seems like things have finally settled down and they've gotten past all the roadblocks that I've been talking about all. freakin. week.

Bemmett Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Season One Bay and Emmett SAB
But - Emmett is actually a good person. We know this. So he can't lie to her forever. He finally confesses his crime and Bay, rightfully, is way pissed off. She storms away and their relationship is ripped asunder.

Bemmett Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Season One Bay and Emmett SAB
Obviously, I'm still mad at Emmett. And happily, on the season premiere last week, so was Bay. She deserves her anger. It was a seriously nasty thing Emmett did and he should atone for a while before Bay forgives him. But I do want Bay to eventually forgive him. I like their coupledom. Sleeping with your virginal girlfriend's ex-friend is really really low and if this were reality - I'd tell Bay that it's something you do not ever forgive. You can never trust him again. But it's not reality - it's television - and I want them together! So... yeah. Give him a chance, fictional Bay!

And thus, with this terrible betrayal of awfulness, I conclude Switched at Birth week. Fall shows start up soon, so stick around. Hopefully, there's lots of angst to come!

Switched at Birth: Emmett and Bay Roadblock Four - Daddy Drama

Next up on the Emmet-Bay Angst Hit Parade is Emmett's Daddy Dearest. After Mama makes Emmett sell his motorcycle to help pay the bills associated with getting arrested, Emmett is pretty pissed off. His best course of retaliation is to tell his mom that he's out. So - he moves in with his dad.

Sean Berdy and Vanessa Marano as Emmett Bledsoe and Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Bemmett
It's like Emmett visits Pinocchio's Pleasure Island. There's alcohol, drugs, sex, and it's only a matter of time before Emmett turns into a donkey.

Sean Berdy and Vanessa Marano as Emmett Bledsoe and Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Bemmett
Okay, as angsty as becoming a donkey might be, that doesn't actually happen. It really boils down to a lack of parental guidance. Emmett's dad doesn't make sure he goes to school, doesn't make sure he eats, and seems to leave Emmett and Bay alone with his free-spirited-not-remotely-a-mom-type girlfriend who seems to think Emmett and Bay are 19 rather than 16.

Sean Berdy and Vanessa Marano as Emmett Bledsoe and Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Bemmett
At the same time, the nastiness of his parents' divorce is really getting to Emmett. What I'm about to say sounds incredibly corny but you'll just have to forgive me. Emmett looses his faith in love. Watching his parents fall out of love makes him worry that one day he and Bay will fall out of love. And... you know. They're teenagers. So it's not like his fear is totally unfounded.

Sean Berdy and Vanessa Marano as Emmett Bledsoe and Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Bemmett
To which Bay adorably responds - does that mean we're currently in love? They are! I love yous are exchanged and an audience goes, "awwwwwww!"

Sean Berdy and Vanessa Marano as Emmett Bledsoe and Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Bemmett
But the acid that comes from a war between parents has a way of trickling down onto every relationship it touches. It isn't long before Bay is legitimately worried about Emmett's wellbeing. When he starts talking about dropping out of school, Bay makes the difficult decision to butt in and talk to his mother. Such a decision can only lead to drama. If only Bay had had the foresight to talk to Regina instead. Then Regina could have been the one to blab to Melody and at least Bay would have had the cushion of telling Emmett that Regina had promised not to tell. But alas. That wouldn't have made for as much conflict and television is all about conflict.

Sean Berdy and Vanessa Marano as Emmett Bledsoe and Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Bemmett
Of course in the heat of an argument, Melody reveals in front of Emmett that she knows that he's thinking about dropping out. Emmett is rightfully pissed off that his girlfriend betrayed his trust. Don't get me wrong - I think Bay did essentially the right thing - but it was still a betrayal, even if it was for Emmett's own good.

Sean Berdy and Vanessa Marano as Emmett Bledsoe and Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay Bemmett
Now there is a fissure in their relationship and sadly, things never really get all the way healed before Emmet's GIANT DOUCHE MOVE at the end of the season. More on that tomorrow.

Switched at Birth: Emmett and Bay Roadblock Three - The MAN

Okay - so this one is actually pretty specifically Emmett angst. It has some fallout on his relationship with Bay, but for the most part, this is all about him.

Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe on Switched At Birth Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe on Switched At Birth Sean Berdy Emmett gets arrested
Emmett gets arrested for spray-painting the billboard for Bay's birthday. Switched at Birth does this clever little bit of business where one episode contains the arrest scene from Emmett's POV - silent, difficult to see, impossible to understand. The following episode contains the scene with the soundtrack. And we learn that Emmett's being arrested and the wrench in his hand is being perceived as a weapon. It's the first real poor Emmett moment. Where you want to jump through the screen and give him a hug.

Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe on Switched At Birth Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe on Switched At Birth Sean Berdy Emmett gets arrested
His mom shows up at the police station and Emmett's visibly shaken. And moms is visibly pissed off. There's no chance that Bay is getting that apology she was promised now.

It's Daphne who provides the hugs and comfort that Emmett needs. She gets it, she's deaf. She can relate to the sensory depravation horrible-ness in a way Bay really couldn't. Plus, there's something less embarrassing about opening up to a friend than a girlfriend - at least when you're a teenager.

Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe on Switched At Birth Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe on Switched At Birth Sean Berdy Emmett gets arrested
It's an interesting component to the Emmett arc. The kid who started out totally confident, totally cool, totally okay with being deaf and uninterested in what hearing people thought or did is finding himself struggling with them constantly now. And in large part, it's because he's fallen for Bay.

Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe on Switched At Birth Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe on Switched At Birth Emmett and Daphne
Bay - in classic this-is-why-I-like-Bay fashion - brings Emmett out and displays her new method of legal-ish but definitely not permanent street art. She says she knows that she won't ever fully understand. But it'd be nice if Emmett could at least try to explain it to her. It kind of goes along with the whole relationship thing.

Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe on Switched At Birth Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish Emmett and BayVanessa Marano Sean Berdy Bay and Emmett
Emmett says that sometimes he hates hearing people. And Bay basically says join the club. She hates everyone at times. And she can hate The Man just as well as the next guy.

Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe on Switched At Birth Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish Emmett and Bay Vanessa Marano Sean Berdy Bay and Emmett
The episode has a pleasant resolution. But things between Emmet, his mom, and Bay only become more complicated. In a lot of ways, Melody, Bay and Emmett are the real triangle that screws up things for E and B. Tomorrow; Irresponsible Daddy Drama.

Switched at Birth: Emmett and Bay Roadblock Two - Mama Bear

Okay, so still playing catch up. After Daphne fails to snag Emmett at the camp site, she has a nice flirtatious swim with Wilke and sort of chills on the whole Emmett hunt. But new trouble is right around the corner.

Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe on Switched At Birth Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe on Switched At Birth
Emmett and Bay are hanging out when Mama Bear Melody (played by Marlee Matlin) busts in and goes after Emmett for dropping AP Bio. He dropped it so that he could take Speech Therapy which for mama, translates to Bay's Fault. There's a whole slew of reasons a mom might feel threatened by her son's new girlfriend, and unfortunately, Bay ticks off quite a few of those boxes and then invents new boxes and ticks those off too.

Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish on Switched At Birth Emmett and Bay
I mostly feel bad for Bay in this episode. And you know me - I'm not really one with the chick-angst.  But it's rough on Emmett too. From his mom's perspective - Bay is a bad influence. He comes home in bloody clothes, drops classes, decides he wants to be in Speech Therapy, and maybe worst of all, Bay is hearing while deaf, perfect, Daphne is RIGHT there, just waiting. Daphne fits nicely into their established lives, Bay not so much.

Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe on Switched At Birth Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe on Switched At Birth
In Bay's attempt to win Mama over, they have a disastrous date night in which Marlee Matlin is unnecessarily cruel. Bay makes a mistaking with her signing and Mama Bear makes fun of her. Emmett, Bay, and Regina are all rightfully peeved.

Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish on Switched At Birth Emmett and Bay
Later, Emmett and his mom argue about Bay. Emmett has found himself in the unexpected situation of wanting to interact with more hearing people than he's previously needed to. And he blames Meldoy for how difficult that's proving to be. On the other side of the track, Melody is a little stung that Emmett is pushing back against the life she's always provided. It's classic teenage rebellion stuff tinted with the deaf/hearing conflict. The argument ends with Melody promising to apologize to Bay but things only get worse in the following episode.

It's safe to say - no apology will be forthcoming. Tomorrow - ARESTO-ANGST!

Switched at Birth: Emmett and Bay Roadblock One - Daphne

Happy Labor Day! Apart from being the day on which we pay tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers, it's also a fantastic day for television marathons. And seeing as Switched at Birth returns tonight, ABCFamily has dedicated the day to this little gem of a show.

Sean Berdy and Katie Leclerc as Emmett Bledsoe and Daphne Vasquez on Switched at Birth Emmett and Daphne
Considering ALL THE OTHER TELEVISION has ended, I figured I would devote not only today - but every day this week to catching up on the Bay/Emmett saga. When last I left them, things were pretty fine and dandy. But now, finally, the angst gets going. Speed bump after speed bump derails this oh-so-adorable couple. And speed bump number one, thy name is Daphne.

Sean Berdy and Katie Leclerc as Emmett Bledsoe and Daphne Vasquez on Switched at Birth Emmett and Daphne
After a bazillion years of best-friend-itude, Daphne finally decides she likes likes Emmett. And her timing is pretty sucktastic. After a stolen kiss, Emmett rightly blows her off, declaring he's with Bay. But when Bay actually shows up, Emmett picks a fight with her. Now that he realizes Daphne might be an option for him, he's hung up on the communication difficulties he has with Bay. I really like this moment because Bay immediately understands what has actually happened. She knows Daphne must have told Emmett about her new found feelings. It's great that Bay calls him on it - and hopefully - it makes him feel like dirt.

Sean Berdy and Vanessa Marano as Emmett Bledsoe and Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay
Later in the episode is perhaps the sweetest Bay/Emmett moment to date. Emmett tells Bay that he's never seen her as hearing or deaf - to him, she's just Bay. And he uses his voice for the first time, telling Bay that he wants her just the way she is. Being picked is always lovelier when you're being picked over someone else.

Sean Berdy and Katie Leclerc as Emmett Bledsoe and Daphne Vasquez on Switched at Birth Emmett and Daphne
However, Daphne's not willing to just acquiesce. She tries, and fails, to get Emmett back. But it leads to more hearing/deaf angst between E and B. Bay doesn't know the rules. She hasn't yet learned to deal with the somewhat uncomfortable situations that arise when people don't know Emmett is deaf.

Sean Berdy and Vanessa Marano as Emmett Bledsoe and Bay Kennish on Switched at Birth Emmett and Bay
Unfortunately, Daphne is needed to translate Emmett's explanation about why Bay's attempts to help were embarrassing and belittling. Emmett and Bay both end up a bit unhappy that things can't just be easier.

As Daphne recedes into the background of the Emmett/Bay drama, another lady moves in front and center. And she's not playing around. Tomorrow is all about the mama drama.
